Nowadays, players not only want to play games but also want to watch their favorite game worlds on cinema or television screens. Hollywood’s new favorite for adaptations is now games. Recently, adaptations of many games like The Last of Us, Mario, and Fallout have been watched by audiences. A new survey has revealed which popular game series players want to see on screen. Here are the details…
Players are looking forward to Zelda, CoD, and GTA adaptations!
The National Research Group (NRG) conducted a survey involving 1,001 PC and console players. According to the survey, players most want to see an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. The second most desired adaptation is Call of Duty, followed by Grand Theft Auto in third place.
Other games that made it into the top 10 include Fortnite, Red Dead Redemption, The Sims, Minecraft, God of War, Mass Effect, and Final Fantasy. The survey used NRG’s Franchise IQ system, which has tracked the popularity of hundreds of entertainment franchises over the past five years.
Additionally, 72% of survey participants stated that watching a game adaptation would encourage them to play the same game again. 65% said that adaptations make it easier to share the games they love with their close circles.
However, not all game adaptations are well-loved. 77% of the survey participants believe that adaptations should be written and directed by people who truly love the original games. 59% said they feel emotionally betrayed when adaptations are made by people who do not know and respect the games.
Which game adaptations will players soon be able to watch?
Sony Pictures Entertainment announced last November that it is working on a live-action Legend of Zelda film adaptation with Nintendo. Sony is also developing a God of War series for Prime Video.
Filming for Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie, starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, was completed last April. Additionally, a Minecraft series adaptation for Netflix is expected. Margot Robbie, who caused a stir with Barbie last year, will produce the film adaptation of The Sims game series through her production company, LuckyChap.
HBO’s The Last of Us, Prime Video’s Fallout, and Peacock’s Twisted Metal series quickly became audience favorites, and their second seasons are currently in production.
NRG research director Fergus Navaratnam-Blair explained why game adaptations have become Hollywood’s new favorite: “For many years, game IPs were overlooked in Hollywood, but lately, storytellers seem to have succeeded in this area. As superhero series struggle more at the box office, many studio executives see games as the new savior.”
Players now want to watch games, and these adaptations are becoming increasingly popular in Hollywood. This also shows that the relationship between games and cinema/television is growing stronger. Which game adaptation would you like to watch?
